The Safest Shortcut to Shop Non-Toxic: Understanding the EWG Verified® Mark
If you’ve ever stood in an aisle comparing bottles labelled “natural,” “eco,” “non-toxic,” and “green,” you’re not alone. With so many marketing claims today, it’s hard to know which products are genuinely safer for your family — and which ones are just clever branding.
The good news? You don’t need to be a chemist to make informed choices.
One of the easiest shortcuts to shop clean is to look out for the EWG Verified® mark — a logo backed by science, transparency, and rigorous research.
Who Is the Environmental Working Group (EWG)?
The Environmental Working Group (EWG) is a US nonprofit organisation founded in 1993 with a simple mission: to help people live healthier lives in a healthier environment.
EWG is best known for tools that make scientific research accessible to everyday consumers:
- Skin Deep® — a database rating the safety of more than 90,000 personal care products and ingredients.
- Dirty Dozen™ and Clean Fifteen™ — annual guides that rank fruits and vegetables based on pesticide residues.
At The Generation Clean, we often refer to the EWG Skin Deep® database when evaluating ingredients, ensuring the products we curate meet the highest standards of safety and transparency.
What the EWG Verified® Mark Means — and What It Takes to Earn It

The EWG Verified® mark appears only on products that meet EWG’s strictest standards for health, transparency, and ingredient safety across categories like personal care, baby care, and home cleaning.
Here’s what happens behind the scenes before a product earns the mark:
1. Ingredient Screening
Every ingredient in the formula is reviewed against EWG’s “Unacceptable” and “Restricted” lists. These lists include substances linked to health, environmental, or contamination concerns — meaning you won’t find ingredients like formaldehyde releasers and parabens.
2. Full Ingredient Disclosure
Brands must fully disclose every single ingredient, including fragrance components and non-chemical materials such as wipes or cloth substrates. There’s no room for vague terms like “fragrance” or “proprietary blend” — complete transparency is required.
3. Compliance with Global Safety Standards
EWG references guidelines and data from globally recognised authorities including:
- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
- The European Commission
- Health Canada
- Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare
- International Fragrance Association
- Personal Care Products Council’s Cosmetics Ingredient Review
Products must also follow EU labelling rules for fragrance allergens and nanomaterials — among the strictest in the world.
4. Safety Documentation & Scientific Review
Brands are required to submit supporting documents such as safety assessments, toxicology reports, and manufacturing details. These are reviewed by EWG’s internal team of scientists, chemists, and toxicologists — and products are re-evaluated whenever formulations or suppliers change.
In short: earning the EWG Verified® mark isn’t easy. It’s a voluntary, science-based process that holds companies accountable for what goes into their products and how they communicate it.
Why EWG Verified® Matters

For many, the journey toward living clean begins with a milestone — pregnancy, a new baby, or caring for sensitive skin.
The EWG Verified® mark helps cut through confusing “green” claims, offering a simple way to identify products that meet the highest safety and transparency standards.
It’s especially valuable for pregnant women, babies and children, and those with allergies or skin sensitivities, whose developing or reactive systems are more vulnerable to chemical exposure.
By choosing EWG Verified®, families can shop with confidence — knowing their everyday essentials are safer for both health and home.
A Balanced View: The Limitations of EWG Verified®
No certification is perfect, and it’s important to understand what the EWG Verified® mark does and doesn’t cover.
1. Geographic limitation
The EWG Verified® program is open to brands worldwide, not just those from the U.S. or Europe. However, the mark is still more commonly seen on Western brands, so many smaller or regional Asian brands may not yet be assessed.
2. Scope limitation
EWG Verified® does not assess whether a product is organic, vegan, or cruelty-free — those are separate certifications (e.g. USDA Organic, COSMOS, Leaping Bunny).
3. Voluntary participation
Brands must apply and pay licensing fees. This means some clean and non-toxic brands that meet similar standards may choose not to apply.
4. Evolving research
Toxicology data is always developing — some ingredients still have limited long-term research, and EWG continuously updates its criteria as new information emerges.
At The Generation Clean, we view EWG Verified® as a valuable guidepost — but not the only one.
How The Generation Clean Goes Beyond EWG Verified®
EWG Verified® plays an important role in our TGC Curation Framework, but it’s just one piece of the puzzle.
When selecting products, we also evaluate:
- Other reputable certifications such as COSMOS, Ecocert, USDA Organic, and Leaping Bunny.
- Brand ethics and sustainability, including sourcing, packaging, and community initiatives.
- Alignment with TGC’s core values: vegan, cruelty-free, transparent, minimal plastic, and purpose-driven operations.
Our goal is to curate products that are not only safe and effective — but also kind to people and the planet.
How to Use EWG in Your Own Research
You can use EWG’s public tools to make more confident choices in your everyday life. Here’s a quick guide:
How to Check a Product on EWG Skin Deep® (in Under 2 Minutes):
- Go to ewg.org/skindeep
- Type in the product or brand name
- Review the hazard score (0 = low concern → 10 = high concern)
- If the product isn’t listed, try searching key ingredients individually
- Use it as a reference when comparing products — especially for personal care, baby, and household items
Empowering yourself with knowledge is one of the simplest steps toward a healthier, more intentional home.
